Coptotermes formosanus was initially introduced into the U.S. from ships returning from the Pacific theatre after World War II. New Orleans has the most extensive infestation of this introduced termite species.
Identification
- Tan colored
- 1 inch
- Soldiers have tear drop shaped heads; a small funicle at the top of the head can produce a small glue droplet when the soldiers are disturbed
Environment
- Swarming occurs in the first weeks of June at night
Threats
- Colonies are up to ten times larger than native termites
