With Northwest’s mission to create healthier living and working environments we are now offering a Green Mosquito Control service in addition to our traditional Mosquito Control service.  The Green Mosquito Control Program consists of inspection, identification and source reduction.  Limited product is used in areas needed to control and reduce mosquitoes.

Tips for Mosquito Prevention:

  • Eliminate standing water in flower pots, containers, toys, bird baths, etc. once a week
  • Keep gutters clean
  • Remove litter from yard (mosquitoes can lay eggs in small, discarded items that hold water, such as cans, bottles, wrappers, etc.)
  • Correct drainage problems

Mosquito Facts

  • 4 stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, adult
  • Water must be present for cycle to take place
  • Eggs are laid where standing water exists
  • Standing water that remains for at least 7 days or more is a potential breeding site
  • Mosquito life cycle can be completed in 11-14 days in very warm weather
  • Only female mosquitoes bite – they require a “blood meal” to reproduce
  • Males and females feed on nectar and plant juices for nourishment
  • Exhaled carbon dioxide from up to 150 feet away attracts female to prey
  • Other cues once in range of carbon dioxide: body odor, heat, perfume, beer drinkers, Octanol
  • Mosquito saliva causes the allergic reaction
  • Most common mosquito disease vector in Atlanta: Asian Tiger Mosquito
    • Only mosquito in this area to bite during daytime hours
    • Very aggressive and prefers to bite humans, usually on the lower legs, ankles, and feet
    • Do not fly far from breeding site
    • Identification: black with white stripes on legs and body
    • Diseases:
      • West Nile virus
      • Encephalitis
      • Dog heart worm
      • Yellow fever
      • Malaria

New Service Center Featured in Ledger-Enquirer

This month, Northwest Exterminating will open its 16th service center in Columbus, GA.  We have been serving this area from our LaGrange office for the past two years and we’re looking forward to putting some roots down in the Columbus area.  We were recently featured in an article that ran in the Ledger-Enquirer.  Check it out below:

Businesses outside Columbus look to take advantage of BRAC boom

Companies outside Columbus also are searching for business opportunities from the Base Realignment and Closure process at Fort Benning.

Northwest Exterminating, a Marietta, Ga.-based company, plans to open an office this month on 54th Street in Columbus, more than six months before the Armor School completes its move from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning.

“We don’t open our office until we can show it can be self sustainable,” said Gail Jones, supervisor of Realtor Relations and Market Development for Northwest Exterminating. “I’m sure that BRAC and Fort Benning have a lot to do with that.”

Jones and the company owner, L.A. Phillips, were among 50 other small business owners, employees and residents at the National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center earlier this week for an update on the Base Realignment and Closure process creating the Maneuver Center of Excellence. By Sept. 15, the total assigned personnel to the Armor School will be 7,500. The expansion is expected to bring about 28,000 people to the Chattahoochee Valley, including soldiers, civilian workers, contractors and family members.

The location of the exterminating business and recent announcements of new restaurants are a trend in general growth, said Gary Jones, executive vice president of Economic Development and Military Affairs at the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

“What we are seeing is general growth that you associate with an influx of people that are primarily going to be in need of the service sector,” Gary Jones said.

The area can anticipate some growth in the service sector along with growth at Fort Benning, Gary Jones said.

“I think we can anticipate either expansion of existing or growth of new service sector business that will parallel the increase we expect from Base Realignment and Closure and general growth at Fort Benning,” he said.

Gail Jones said the company will open its 16th location on 54th Street this month after serving the city from its LaGrange, Ga., location for the last two years. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the company specializes in pretreatment for new residential home construction.

How to Prevent Spiders from Hanging Around Your Home

The house spider is a common problem in the US.  The most effective way of getting rid of spiders is to prevent them from ever coming into your home.  Spiders, like most insects, come into your home in search of food.  By ridding your home of other insects…your home will be useless to the spider. 

Ways to Prevent Spiders from coming into your home:

  • Spider survival is low in homes with low humidity, few insects, higher garages, sheds, barns, warehouses, etc.
  • Spider webs are often built in corners and angles of walls and windows.
  • Spiders build webs by trial and error which explains why there may be multiple vacant webs around your home. 
  • Keep home clean.  Clutter is good for spiders because it gives them a place to hide.
  • Use a vacuum to remove spiders, eggs and webs. 
  • Ensure that bushes and other plants are trimmed back from the outside wall of your home.
  • Make sure mulch is kept a few inches back from the foundation of your home.
  • Seal any cracks or crevices that can be used as an entrance for spiders into the home.
  • Use plastic storage boxes instead of cardboard.  Spiders love cardboard.
