Northwest Exterminating teammates in Smyrna, GA, hosted a First Responder Cookout on June 12, 2025, at Tolleson Park. More than two dozen police officers, firefighters, and EMT personnel gathered to enjoy a delicious meal of burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, and baked beans.
The event provided a meaningful opportunity for teammates to connect with the first responders who serve and protect the community every day. Smyrna teammates worked in shifts to ensure customer needs were met while also supporting the cookout—helping with setup, serving, and cleanup. By the end of the event, everyone left with full bellies and big smiles.

For some officers, this was their first experience attending a Northwest First Responder Cookout; for others, it was one of many. When asked what made this one stand out, Major Louis Defense III with the Smyrna Police Department shared, “This cookout is definitely a display of what it means to be a community.”
While first responders expressed gratitude for the meal and hospitality, the appreciation went both ways. At Northwest Exterminating, it’s a privilege to recognize and thank those who help keep the communities where we live and work safe.

Ghost ants are a common nuisance in Florida, especially during warm, humid months. Small but persistent, they often invade homes in search of food and moisture. Their pale, translucent bodies and dark heads make them hard to spot, and their ability to form multiple colonies indoors makes them tough to eliminate. Knowing where they hide and how to prevent them is key to keeping these tiny pests out.
A Guide to Ghost Ants in Florida
Top Signs of a Ghost Ant Infestation
Ghost ants are drawn to moisture and sweets, often showing up in kitchens and bathrooms. Here’s how to spot an infestation:
- Visible Ant Trails: Fast-moving lines of ants along counters or walls, especially near sugary spills.
- Clusters Near Moisture: Found around sinks, leaky pipes, or humid spots.
- Sweet Smell When Crushed: A faint, sugary scent may be noticeable when ants are squashed.
If you spot any of these signs, act quickly to prevent the problem from spreading.
Where They Like to Hide
Ghost ants are masters of staying out of sight, which makes them especially challenging to deal with. They can squeeze into incredibly tight spaces and establish nests in various hidden areas. Here are some of their favorite hiding spots:
1. Behind Baseboards
Baseboards provide a discreet entry point as well as a cozy nesting area. These spots are particularly appealing in homes with moisture issues.
2. Under Sinks
Leaky pipes and damp cabinets create ideal conditions for these ants. Inspect these areas frequently, as they’re a common hotspot for ant activity.
3. Potted Plants
Ghost ants often nest within the moist soil of indoor plants, so be sure to check for unusual movement around your greenery.
4. Inside Electrical Outlets
Small spaces like electrical outlets or wall voids are perfect for these ants to build nests and expand their colonies unnoticed.
5. Kitchen Appliances
Ghost ants are drawn to food sources, and kitchen appliances often provide hidden crumbs and moisture. Check behind refrigerators, under toasters, and inside cabinets for signs of activity.
How to Prevent and Get Rid of Ghost Ants
Ghost ants are persistent, but with a few proactive steps, you can keep them out.
Prevention Tips:
- Clean Up Food: Wipe counters, clear crumbs, and store food in airtight containers.
- Fix Leaks: Repair pipes and reduce moisture in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Seal Entry Points: Close gaps around windows, doors, and baseboards with caulk or weather stripping.
- Check Plants: Don’t overwater and inspect indoor plants for signs of ants.
How to Get Rid of Them:
- Use Baits: Place sweet or protein-based ant baits along active trails.
- Erase Trails: After you have eliminated the ants, clean surfaces with vinegar and water to disrupt scent paths.
- Try Natural Repellents: Diatomaceous earth and essential oils like peppermint can help deter them.
Because ghost ants form multiple colonies, a persistent problem may need professional treatment.
Don’t Ignore Ghost Ants
Ghost ants may be tiny, but the inconvenience they bring is anything but small. By understanding the signs of an infestation and taking proactive steps to prevent them, you can keep your home ant-free and comfortable year-round. Pest infestations can wreak havoc on businesses, impacting everything from customer confidence to regulatory compliance. Whether you operate a restaurant, retail store, or office building, pests can threaten your reputation, property, and bottom line. That’s where commercial exterminators come in. With year-round strategies and tailored solutions, these professionals work to ensure your business remains pest-free, protecting everything you’ve worked hard to build.
Protect Your Business With Commercial Exterminators
Why Year-Round Pest Control Matters
Pests don’t take vacations. They can pose risks to businesses during any season, turning what may seem like minor issues into costly problems. A single infestation could lead to:
- Health violations and fines.
- Product contamination.
- Damage to property or inventory.
- Loss of customer trust and loyalty.
By investing in professional pest control, you can prevent these risks and ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and health for your employees and customers.
Key Strategies for Around-the-Clock Pest Protection
1. Regular Inspections
Professional commercial exterminators conduct routine inspections to catch problems before they escalate. During these assessments, experts look for early warning signs like droppings, nests, or structural vulnerabilities, often targeting specific areas like storage rooms, kitchens, or utility spaces. Identifying and addressing these issues promptly saves businesses time and money down the line.
2. Customized Treatment Plans
No two businesses are alike, and neither are their pest challenges. Commercial exterminators create tailored treatment plans based on the type of business, the pests most likely to invade, and the property’s layout. For example, a restaurant may require robust ant and fly prevention strategies, while a warehouse might focus on deterring rodents.
Customized plans often include eco-friendly solutions, allowing businesses to address pest problems without compromising employee health or environmental sustainability.
3. Preventative Measures
Exterminators don’t just stop infestations; they prevent them from happening in the first place. Common preventative measures include:
- Sanitation Guidance: Exterminators offer advice on maintaining clean, pest-resistant spaces, such as proper waste disposal or keeping food storage areas secure.
- Monitoring Stations: Placing bait and monitoring stations in strategic areas helps catch pests before they can establish colonies.
These proactive steps ensure your business is always one step ahead of potential infestations.
Benefits of Maintaining a Pest-Free Business
Investing in year-round pest control provides numerous benefits, going far beyond eliminating pests:
- Protect Your Reputation: Customers want to know they’re interacting with a clean, healthy and professional establishment. A pest-free environment builds trust and confidence in your brand.
- Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Many industries, especially food service and healthcare, face strict health and strict regulations. Year-round pest prevention helps businesses meet these standards and avoid costly penalties.
- Protect Property and Inventory: Rodents and insects can damage walls, wiring, furniture, and products. Long-term pest control keeps your property and assets in top condition.
- Save Time and Money: Preventative strategies reduce the likelihood of costly infestations, minimizing downtime and repair costs.

Jun 5, 2025 | Florida Green Pest Control
Florida’s warm, humid climate is perfect for cockroaches, making homes vulnerable to infestations. These pests thrive in moisture, spread bacteria and allergens, and can trigger asthma. Fortunately, eco-friendly cockroach control strategies can help keep your home clean and pest-free.
Eco-Friendly Cockroach Control For Florida Homes
Why Florida’s Climate Fuels Cockroach Problems
- Year-round warmth: Cockroaches breed and spread easily in Florida’s consistent heat.
- High humidity: Moisture-rich air supports their rapid reproduction and longevity.
- Plenty of hiding spots: From outdoor plants to cracks in buildings, Florida offers ideal shelters.
Because of these factors, controlling cockroaches in Florida requires ongoing, proactive efforts.
Natural Cockroach Repellents That Actually Work
You don’t need harsh chemicals to repel cockroaches—natural cockroach control methods are effective, healthier for your family, and eco-friendly.
1. Cockroach-Repelling Plants
- Catnip: Contains nepetalactone, which repels roaches. Place near entry points.
- Bay Leaves: Their strong scent deters roaches; tuck them in cabinets and pantries.
- Mint: Grow indoors or around your home’s perimeter for a refreshing, pest-repelling scent.
2. Essential Oils
- Peppermint Oil: Spray diluted drops along baseboards and sinks.
- Tea Tree Oil: Mix with water and vinegar for a roach-repelling cleaner.
- Eucalyptus Oil: Use in diffusers or sprays to drive roaches away.
3. Homemade Sprays
- Soap and Water: Dish soap solution clogs roaches’ breathing pores.
- Baking Soda and Sugar: Sugar lures roaches; baking soda harms them when ingested.
Natural repellents offer a gentle, effective alternative to chemical sprays.
Eco-Friendly Home Maintenance to Prevent Cockroach Infestations
Prevention is key to keeping cockroaches away. A clean, well-maintained home makes it hard for them to settle.
- Seal Entry Points
Cockroaches squeeze through tiny cracks. Check walls, windows, and doors, then seal gaps with caulk or weather stripping. Add mesh screens over vents and drains.
- Fix Leaks and Moisture
Roaches need water to survive. Repair leaks, use dehumidifiers in damp areas, and empty standing water from pet bowls or plant trays daily.
- Reduce Clutter
Clutter hides roaches. Clear paper stacks and boxes, store items in sealed bins, and keep cupboards organized for easy cleaning.
Green Cleaning Habits to Deter Cockroaches
- Use natural cleaners like vinegar and baking soda to avoid chemicals.
- Clean crumbs and spills immediately; store food in airtight containers.
- Take out trash nightly and use sealed bins.
- Deep clean under appliances, inside cabinets, and along baseboards regularly.
Take the Green Route to Cockroach Control
Florida’s humid climate favors cockroaches, but eco-friendly steps like sealing entry points, fixing leaks, decluttering, and using natural repellents can keep them away. For persistent infestations, seek a pest control professional specializing in green solutions.
