At Northwest, we believe in the power of kindness and its impact on our communities. This year, we proudly celebrated our second annual Teammate Acts of Kindness Day, where our teams across the Southeast came together to spread goodwill and make a difference in the lives of others. Our initiatives were diverse, thoughtful, and heartwarming and resulted in completing over 1,700+ Acts of Kindness in one day!
In our Smyrna office, teammates brought in beautiful flowers, delicious cookies, and thoughtful goodie bags to share with one another. The atmosphere was filled with joy and appreciation as we celebrated the small gestures that can brighten someone’s day. Our Homewood team also participated enthusiastically, bringing each other goodie bags filled with snacks and treats.
Beyond the office, our teams went above and beyond for our customers. Teammates engaged in acts such as bringing trash cans up for customers, fixing mailboxes, and watering plants. The East Cobb team bought pizzas for the surrounding Service Centers, spreading cheer and goodwill among our extended team. In Opelika, a teammate helped push someone’s car to the nearest gas station, while in Monroe, someone assisted in jumping a customer’s car. These thoughtful gestures demonstrated our commitment to extending kindness beyond our immediate team, touching the lives of our customers and showing them that we truly care about their well-being.
Teammate Acts of Kindness Day is more than just a day of good deeds; it’s a testament to our commitment to creating a positive and supportive environment both within our team and in the communities we serve. We are proud of the initiatives our teammates undertook and look forward to continuing this tradition of kindness and community spirit in the years to come.

In a gesture of compassion and solidarity, our team recently participated in the 23rd Annual HomeAid Essentials Drive, a pivotal event aimed at supporting families grappling with homelessness in metro Atlanta. Understanding the critical needs of these vulnerable families, particularly women and children, we rallied together to collect and donate essential baby supplies such as diapers, wipes, and other necessities.
The significance of these donations cannot be overstated, especially considering that an estimated 4,770 individuals experience homelessness in metro Atlanta on any given night, with nearly 35% being women and children. For families facing economic hardship, the cost of diapers alone can pose a substantial burden, with babies requiring up to 12 diapers a day. By participating in the Essentials Drive, we sought to alleviate some of the stress and challenges faced by these families during times of crisis and transition.
Through the collective efforts of the metro Atlanta home building industry and generous community members, the Essentials Drive has amassed over 2.1 million baby items since its inception in 2002, providing invaluable support to countless families in need. We are honored to have been a part of this impactful initiative, contributing to the well-being and dignity of families in our community and reaffirming our commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of those facing adversity.

Living in the beautiful state of Georgia comes with its fair share of wildlife encounters, and one of the most feared encounters for many homeowners is stumbling upon a venomous snake. With over 40 species of snakes slithering through the Georgia landscape, it’s essential to know how to distinguish between harmless serpents and those that pose a threat. In this guide, we’ll explore common venomous snakes in Georgia, their identifying features, where they can be found, associated risks, and what to do if you encounter one. Additionally, we’ll provide tips on how to deter venomous snakes from entering your yard, ensuring a safer environment for you and your family.
Common Venomous Snakes in Georgia
- Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus)
- Identifying Features: Known for its distinctive diamond-shaped patterns along its back, this snake’s coloration ranges from gray to brown with dark brown or black diamonds outlined in white.
- Habitat: Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes prefer pine forests, coastal scrub habitats, and sandy areas.
- Risks: Their potent venom can be fatal if not treated promptly. They are known to be aggressive when threatened.
- Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
- Identifying Features: Copperheads have copper-colored heads and hourglass-shaped patterns along their bodies. They often blend well with their surroundings.
- Habitat: Copperheads are commonly found in wooded areas, rocky hillsides, and suburban neighborhoods.
- Risks: While their venom is less potent than other venomous snakes, a bite can still result in severe pain, swelling, and tissue damage.
- Eastern Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius)
- Identifying Features: Recognizable by their brightly colored bands of red, yellow, and black, coral snakes have a distinct pattern: red touches yellow, kill a fellow; red touches black, venom lack.
- Habitat: They inhabit pine flatwoods, hardwood forests, and coastal plains.
- Risks: Coral snakes possess potent neurotoxic venom, although they are not aggressive and rarely bite humans.
What to Do If You Encounter a Venomous Snake
If you come across a venomous snake on your property or while out in nature, it’s crucial to remain calm and follow these steps:
- Give the Snake Space: Back away slowly to give the snake an escape route. Most snake bites occur when people try to handle or kill the snake.
- Do Not Provoke or Agitate: Venomous snakes will typically only strike if they feel threatened. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises that may startle the snake.
- Seek Medical Attention: If you or someone else is bitten by a venomous snake, seek medical attention immediately. Do not attempt to treat the bite yourself.
- Note the Snake’s Appearance: If it’s safe to do so, try to remember the snake’s color, pattern, and size. This information can help medical professionals determine the appropriate treatment.
Deterring Venomous Snakes from Your Yard
Prevention is key when it comes to keeping venomous snakes away from your property. Here are some tips to deter them:
- Keep Your Yard Tidy: Remove clutter, such as piles of wood, debris, and tall grass, where snakes may hide.
- Seal Entry Points: Seal any gaps or holes in your home’s foundation, walls, and around doors and windows to prevent snakes from entering.
- Trim Vegetation: Keep shrubs, bushes, and grass trimmed short to reduce hiding spots for snakes.
- Use Snake Repellents: Consider using snake repellents or natural deterrents like mothballs or essential oils around the perimeter of your property.
- Consult a Wildlife Control Company: If you have a persistent snake problem, consider hiring a professional wildlife control company. They can safely remove snakes from your property and implement preventive measures to keep them from returning.
By familiarizing yourself with the common venomous snakes in Georgia and taking proactive measures to deter them from your property, you can minimize the risk of encountering these potentially dangerous reptiles. Remember, when it comes to venomous snakes, caution and prevention are your best defenses.
If you encounter a venomous snake on your property and need assistance with snake relocation or wildlife control, don’t hesitate to contact a reputable wildlife control company in your area. Stay safe and informed, and enjoy the beauty of Georgia’s wildlife responsibly.

Mosquitoes are not only nuisance pests, but also pose a potential threat to businesses, especially those in outdoor or hospitality sectors. While the annoyance of mosquito bites is well-known, the health risks they pose and the negative impact on customer experience and business reputation are often underestimated. Continue reading to discover the reasons why mosquito control for business is important.
Protecting Customers and Employees
Mosquitoes are vectors for various diseases, including West Nile Virus, Zika virus, dengue fever, and malaria. Not attempting to control mosquito populations on your properties can expose your customers and employees to these health risks – leading to a poor reputation. Mosquito bites can lead to discomfort, allergic reactions, and in severe cases, transmission of diseases. Putting a mosquito reduction program into place can demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of both customers and your team.
Enhancing Customer Experience
If your business relies on outdoor settings, such as restaurants, wedding venues, or recreational facilities, then mosquitoes can significantly detract from the customer experience. Nothing ruins a pleasant outdoor experience more than swarms of mosquitoes. By proactively addressing mosquito infestations through professional mosquito control measures, you create a more enjoyable experience for your customers.
How Can I Reduce Mosquitoes Around My Business?
- Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap filled with water, so regularly clearing out areas where standing water occurs will help. Other places to keep an eye on are flowerpot trays, drain pans, and water features.
- Regularly clean and maintain gutters and downspouts to prevent standing water.
- Ensure your property has adequate drainage and keep drains clear to prevent water from backing up and forming puddles – especially after rainfall!
- Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so installing ceiling fans in outdoor seating areas can lessen the chances of mosquitoes bothering your guests.
Even if you take preventative measures, mosquitoes can still become a nuisance – putting your customers and teammates at risk. Be sure to call a pest management team near you for a free, personalized, no-obligation quote for mosquito control for your business!
