HAPPY NEW YEAR…well, almost!! It’s New Years Eve!! It’s a time for reflection over the past year as well as excitement for the year to come. We had some major highlights in 2012. Below are just a few:

Not at all! Pest has meant “noxious or troublesome person or thing” since the 1600s.

The word exterminatus means “drive out, expel, drive beyond boundaries.” Modern English has led to a word meaning of “utter destruction.” We at Northwest more closely follow the original meaning of pest exterminating, by making sure your home is pest free without using harsh chemicals that can lead to more harm than good. Hort oil can be beneficial to your trees and shrubs to control pests. Many traditional pest control solutions can be harmful to plants. Advantages of using oil are safety, effectiveness, and limited effects on insects that are beneficial to plants.
Hort oil is often used in the winter months to control mites, aphids, caterpillars, and scale insects that tend to make a home on plants during this time of year. Although most commonly used in the winter, hort oil can also be used in the summer time to control a host of other insects and mites. Hort oil can also protect plants from diseases like powdery mildew and some aphid-transmitted viruses.
You should be aware that there is a small chance that it could harm certain plants, especially those in need of water. Oils can stain surfaces of dark colored house plants. As with any pest control solution, be sure to read instructions carefully and follow all directions.

White Fly
It’s the holiday season and while many plants are losing leaves and color in the cold, poinsettia plants thrive. These winter plants are native to the area around Taxco, Mexico. Their name comes from that of the first United States ambassador to Mexico, Joel R. Poinsett. Though the most popular color for this plant is red, poinsettias also come in pink, white, yellow, speckled or marbled.
A common myth is that these lovely flowered plants are poisonous. In actuality, it is merely recommended not to consume the plant and the sap may cause mild skin irritation to those who are sensitive to it. Still, though this plant may not be recommended for humans, plenty of pests delight in the lovely plant for more than just its beauty.
Pests that may be attracted to poinsettias include white flies, fungus gnats, mealybugs and spider mites. These pests tend to attack either the plant itself or the social surface. Mealybugs, in particular,

will feed on the leaves of the poinsettia plants. If caught early, be sure to gently clean the leaves of your plant with alcohol on a swab.

Baking is a big part of tradition for lots of people during the holiday season. And what better time while you’re breaking out all of the baking supplies to inspect your pantry for signs of pests. Pests are living creatures that are in search of the same things we are…food, water, and shelter. A pantry where those necessities are stored is an ideal place for pests to make a home.
Common pests that are found in pantries:
Below are tips on ways to inspect your pantry for pests:
- Place foods in tightly sealed containers. This will keep bugs out and freshness in.
- Unpack seasonal decorations outside. Dried foliage, potpourri, etc, should be unpacked outside of the home and inspected before displaying in your home.
- Place a bay leaf in containers of dry foods like flour and rice. The smell of bay leaves often repels pests.
- Inspect groceries before bringing them in to your home. As with anything you bring into your home, be sure to inspect it.
- Always check the date before using items in your pantry. Frequent checks of this throughout the year can be beneficial.
- Clean messes immediately. Wipe any spills or crumbs as soon as they happen and take the trash out regularly.
- Place trash in a tightly sealed bag. Remove the bag frequently to a garbage can outside of the home that is equipped with a tightly sealed lid.
- Seal cracks or holes that pests could use to enter your home.
- Eliminate moisture areas. Seal leaky pipes and use humidifiers in the home. Water is a major attractant for bugs so the less access they have to water, the better.
If you find pests in your pantry, throw out the infested food immediately. If pests have made a home in your pantry you should call your professional pest control company. A professional exterminator will be able to inspect the area and treat the problem properly and efficiently.

We are currently in Round 8 of our treatments. The main focus of this treatment is lime application. Lime is essential for regulating the pH levels in the soil.
For best results:
- The treatment should be watered in within 48 hours.
- The lawn should not be mowed 2 days before or after the treatment.
Round 8 is the final treatment in our year long treatment plan for a healthy lawn. Each treatment is applied seasonally, due to the needs of lawns at that time. Next, we will start Round 1.
