Pigeons

Identification

  • Medium sized bird

  • Grey color with two black bars on the wings, heads may have a metallic purple green sheen

  • Easily recognized

  • Often found in large flocks

Environment

  • Found throughout the world, particularly in highly populated areas

  • Can nest practically anywhere in cosmopolitan areas that have a reasonable amount of shelter

Threats

  • They pose no real threat, more of an annoyance due to large numbers and tendency to crowd around when food is present

  • There is the potential for them to spread various diseases

Treatment

  • The only way to treat for pigeons is to prevent them from establishing in an area

  • Keep the area as unappealing for them as possible by using decoys, protective netting, and spikes that will make it challenging to roost

  • Do not feed pigeons in public areas and try to limit all additional food resources in the area
