Silverfish

You may encounter silverfish when you are moving in or out of a home.

 

Identification

  • Silverfish are slender in size

  • About 1/2 inch long

  • 2 long antennae on the head and 3 long cerci at the rear

Environment

  • Silverfish are fast moving insects

  • Generally associated with paper or cardboard

  • Usually found when books and other materials are packed up for moving

  • Eat glue from the binding of books and within the corrugation of cardboard

  • Reproduce in or near moist, damp areas such as a basement or in proximity to a bathroom or shower

  • Females lay up to 3 eggs per day

  • Populations grow quickly and consist of many immature nymphs

  • Prefer damp, musty areas

Threats

  • Silverfish are usually found when books and other materials are packed up for moving

  • Eats glue from the binding of books and within the corrugation of cardboard

Treatment

  • Dusts within wall voids and likely breeding sites
