Black Racer Snakes

Identification

  • Large (5+ feet)

  • Slender, solid black color, may have a white chin

  • May be confused for other large, black snakes

  • Most quickly flee from a threat

  • Juveniles look very different from adults, they are grayish colored with darker blotches

Environment

  • Found in nearly any habitat, but are more abundant near forest edges, old fields, or wetland edges

  • Found throughout the eastern US

Threats

  • Peace of mind

  • May bite if handled (non-venomous)

Treatment

  • Keep food sources away from the home

  • Preventative treatment with a product that snakes find repellent
