Garter Snakes

Identification

• Small to medium sized snake (1.5-4 feet long)

• Three yellow stripes running vertically down a dark colored body

Environment

• Prefer protected areas such as woods and marshes, but are also very common in grassy areas and around water

• Very common in suburban areas as long as there is cover for them

• Common throughout the southeast and most of the US

Threats

• Peace of mind

• May bite if handled (non-venomous)

Treatment

• Keep food sources away from the home

• Limit items that can be used as cover around the home

• Preventative treatment with a product that snakes find repellent
