Identification
-
5/8-¾” long
-
Sleek appearance
-
Color varies from red with blackish wings to brown and yellow striped (although more combinations exist)
Environment
-

-
Nests are built on practically any horizontal surface that can be found
Threats
-
Most likely to sting if the nest is disturbed (usually in hidden locations, so happens frequently)
-
Nests may be highly visible and unsightly
-
Stings may be life threatening to sensitive individuals
Treatment
-
Adults must be killed to prevent the nest from being rebuilt; this should be done in the early morning or late at night
-
Nests must be knocked down to discourage rebuilding and to prevent wasps from overwintering
-
Paper wasps are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate threat
