The Southern Unstriped Scorpion, Vaejovis carolinianus, is common throughout north Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and as far north as Kentucky.
Scorpions are ambush hunters: their eyesight is poor so they lay in wait for something to walk past.
Environment
- Found in rocky terrain or in moist, wooded habitats
- Will readily enter homes during the spring and summer months
Threats
- Has a sting roughly equivalent to that of a wasp or hornet
- Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the venom
Treatment
- Generally difficult to control
- Like spiders, scorpions tread lightly and do not readily pick up residual sprays
- Control usually comes down to habitat modification and sealing entry points into the structure
