Paper Wasps

Identification

• 5/8-¾” long

• Sleek appearance

• Color varies from red with blackish wings to brown and yellow striped (although more combinations exist)

Environment

• Nest resembles an umbrella and is attached by a small stem to a surface

• Nests are built on practically any horizontal surface that can be found

Threats

• Most likely to sting if the nest is disturbed (usually in hidden locations, so happens frequently)

• Nests may be highly visible and unsightly

• Stings may be life threatening to sensitive individuals

Treatment

• Adults must be killed to prevent the nest from being rebuilt; this should be done in the early morning or late at night

• Nests must be knocked down to discourage rebuilding and to prevent wasps from overwintering

• Paper wasps are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate threat
