Color varies from red with blackish wings to brown and yellow striped (although more combinations exist)
Environment

Nest resembles an umbrella and is attached by a small stem to a surface

Nests are built on practically any horizontal surface that can be found
Threats

Most likely to sting if the nest is disturbed (usually in hidden locations, so happens frequently)

Nests may be highly visible and unsightly

Stings may be life threatening to sensitive individuals
Treatment

Adults must be killed to prevent the nest from being rebuilt; this should be done in the early morning or late at night

Nests must be knocked down to discourage rebuilding and to prevent wasps from overwintering

Paper wasps are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate threat
